What goals would you like to see achieved with this service? |
I would like the students to become familiar with the databases that are essential to research in theirliterature disciplines (English and Spanish mainly). After the tour they will have to find 5 articles in their subject area as the basis of an assignment (analyzing an article and then writing a summary.) |
Greetings from CMLL. I was hoping you are available to give a library resource tour for my summer graduate research course on June 8, from 2-4 pm. Are you still the CMLL contact person?
Just to give you some background on the course, it is entitled “CMLL 5301 Fundamentals of Research & Scholarship, Academic Communication in Language Studies”, and it is focused on helping graduate students write better research papers. During the semester they will analyze academic writing, and then write a summary and critique of an article before they then have to write their own paper (including annotated bibliography and abstract).
I would like the students to tour the library in the first week to identify resources (physical resources, online databases, & ILL) in the areas of language studies. After the tour they will have to find 5 articles in their subject area as the basis of an assignment (analyzing an article and then writing a summary.)
Could you conduct such a tour? The class has 6 students (current count), and they are all Spanish and English graduate students (MA & Ph.D.) I assume they have used some library resources before, but most likely lack a deeper knowledge of how to find and identify good articles (without google!)
My class meets 2-4pm, I was hoping to schedule Thursday, June 8, but Wednesday, June 7, or Friday, June 9, could also work. What makes it a little tricky, is that I’m in Germany on a scholarship until June 10, so the students will be following written instructions from me.
