ETDs and Metadata: Love Notes to the Future Workshop - Shelley Barba and Heidi Winkler In-Person

Learning Outcomes:

1. Students will understand what metadata is and how it can impact the future usefulness of their research content.

2. Students will learn what types of metadata they can create (and what metadata is auto-created, and how to check it for correctness).

3. Students will learn how to use a basic spreadsheet to build and inventory for their ETD package.

Main ideas, concepts, takeaways from session:

  • Learn what metadata is and how good metadata can impact your dissertation

  • Learn what correct metadata looks like

  • Create good metadata in Vireo now so that you don’t have to worry about it later

Abstract:

Metadata, simply defined, is data about data, created and stored alongside content. Metadata describes and documents research, data, and publications (such as a thesis or dissertation) to help users find and understand that content. Understanding the value and uses of metadata, and knowing what you can do to check and improve it, will go a long way to ensuring that your work is discoverable in the future. Send love to future users and yourself by including metadata with your content.
