Make Laser-cut Business Cards In-Person / Online

In this workshop, attendees will explore TinkerCAD, a free-to-use online 3D modeling and design tool. TinkerCAD is primarily used to create/edit 3D models for 3D printing, but a less-known alternative use of it is to create/edit models for laser cutting and engraving. We just so happen to have a GlowForge laser cutter and engraver in the Makerspace, and we'd love to teach you how to use it to create and cut custom business cards. These are primarily 'one-off' or 'small-batch' jobs, to be used as proof-of-concept or show pieces, but the skills learned here are easily transferable to many other use cases, and this is a great little project to learn and use those basic skills. Using available tools and resources available from the Texas Tech Library and online sources, attendees will discover additional resources to enhance their designs. The presenter will demonstrate the difference in design for engraving versus cutting using the GlowForge. After the workshop, the presenter will be available for any in-person attendees who would like a tour of the Makerspace and Emerging Technologies Area, and for any further discussion/consultation. Virtual attendees are encouraged to reach out to schedule an in-person tour at their convenience.
