Pop-Culture Unveiled: Mastering Humanities Research Skills
Patrons will:
• Gain Insight into Humanities Resources: Develop a comprehensive understanding of humanities resources for analyzing pop culture, literature, and more. • Engage Beyond Databases: Learn to dynamically leverage diverse resources for humanities research, extending beyond traditional databases. • Analyze Historical Artifacts: Understand how objects serve as markers of specific historical periods, indicating changes over time and in various contexts. • Explore Fan Culture: Examine how fan culture imbues meaning into popular culture materials and discover resources for studying various aspects of fan culture.
The Humanities studies human culture through history, literature, philosophy, and the arts. This workshop, "Exploring Humanities through Pop-Culture," empowers participants to use diverse resources such as 3-D objects, maps (real and fictional), newspapers, music, social justice and liberation art, realia, fan culture and art, and propaganda to enrich their research. These resources highlight the multifaceted nature of humanities studies, demonstrating how pop-culture can serve as a lens for examining societal values, historical contexts, and cultural phenomena. Key themes include: 1. Organization of Library Resources in Arts/Humanities: Learn to leverage library systems, digital archives, and special collections to access a wide range of arts and humanities resources. 2. Selecting Resources in Humanities: Develop skills to identify and evaluate sources, understand primary vs. secondary sources, and use traditional and unconventional digital research tools. 3. Writing Styles in Humanities: Understand various writing conventions in humanities disciplines, from analytical essays to reflective narratives, crucial for effective communication of research findings. By the end of this workshop, participants will be equipped to search for, organize, interpret, and utilize pop-culture artifacts in their humanities research, fostering a deeper understanding of human culture and expression.
