This is the fifth of eight workshops in the A.I. Competencies Workshop Series, which features eight free online workshops addressing four foundational areas of artificial intelligence competence: Knowledge & Understanding, Analysis & Evaluation, Use & Application, and Ethical Considerations. Generative AI is rapidly being superseded by agentic AI. AI agents are capable of proactively performing goal-oriented tasks with minimal or no human intervention by creating a list of steps and then executing them autonomously. AI agents can be deployed for searching, summarizing, synthesizing, outlining and drafting research and converting it into papers, posters, presentations and other scholarly outputs without human assistance. This workshop critically explores how AI agents work and their advantages and drawbacks in conducting research.
