A systematic reviews (SR’s) research presents a summary of the published literature that uses explicit and reproducible methods or protocols (PRISMA, Cochrane and Dempster) to search, critically appraise a specific issue/topic of interest to a researcher. It therefore synthesizes the results of multiple research studies answering research questions of common interest by using strategies that reduce biases and random errors. The ultimate objective of the SR’s, is to make the available evidence more accessible to researchers or decision makers with potential to ensure best practices or influence policy. While SR’s have all the characteristics of a literature review, it does not seek to create new knowledge but rather to synthesize and summarize existing knowledge focusing on research that reports data rather than concepts or theories. SR’s has been used widely in the health sciences but more recently other disciplines such as agriculture, education, engineering and the social sciences have seen a rise in SR’s and related research methodologies. Therefore, it is important that our graduate students in these disciplines avail themselves of this opportunity to hone their skills in systematic reviews through our library workshop series
